Rich Internet Applications (RIA) have features and interfaces similar to traditional desktop applications with better interactivity and data communication than standard web applications.  Instead of the traditional “page refresh” methods of updating to or from the database, RIA allows individual components on the screen to interact with the server on their own, without refreshing the entire page. This allows data to update more quickly and for the entire user experience to become more interactive and responsive.

RIA methods can be used to develop new applications that would be impossible with traditional web technologies. They can be used to simplify complex processes like registration, online shopping and data analysis and can be effectively used to provide an engaging and interactive experience for users. RIA technology can also be made to work with existing web application infrastructure and small modules can be deployed even as part of normal HTML pages.

HTML 5 is an emerging standard and a special case. Currently, the support for HTML 5 in browsers is uneven. But, support is maturing and expanding rapidly in every major browser.
