As we were putting together July’s issue of the Scio SaaS newsletter, we observed several discussions about leveraging cloud services to build SaaS applications. Many in favor point out the time and cost savings for the initial go to market effort, while those who oppose point out the burden of a long term expense associated with delivering their products and the ever-present “vendor lock in”.
I would like to point out that a high percentage of businesses and software products fail in the first 2 years of existence due to a lack of profitability, so maybe it would make more sense to think short, rather than long. You can always renegotiate with vendors down the road but you can’t recover initial investments if you run out of money.
In the meantime, you can drive profitability by giving customers what they are willing to pay for through user driven product innovation technology and processes.
